Cerumen is a fancy word for earwax. Earwax becomes an issue when you wear hearing aids because it can get into the aid causing it to malfunction or the wax can block the ear canal and the amplified sound will leak out of your ear causing feedback. There is nothing we know of that you can do to affect how much earwax you get.
The only safe way to remove earwax at home is with an earwax removal kit you buy at the drug store and my patients have varying levels of success with this. When you see your primary care doctor you can tell them that earwax is a problem when you wear aids (MD’s don’t always know this) and ask them to remove any wax they see. This can help you stay on top of any build up that is developing. We also look in your ears almost every time you come in and we can help you develop a plan for cerumen management.
